Kathmandu: A new book titled "Nepal's Water Resources: Development Patterns and Emerging Challenges in the Era of Climate Change" by veteran water resources expert Mahajan Yadav has been launched, presenting an in-depth analysis of Nepal's water resources, development priorities, and the growing challenges posed by climate change. The publication aims to contribute to evidence-based policy discussions and long-term planning for the sustainable management of the country's water resources.
Drawing on more than three decades of professional experience in Nepal's public service, including his tenure as Joint Secretary (Technical) in the Government of Nepal, Yadav examines the country's water governance, hydropower development, irrigation systems, groundwater management, flood control, and river training initiatives.
According to the book, Nepal's abundant water resources should be viewed not only as a source of hydropower generation but also as a strategic foundation for agricultural modernization, food security, industrial growth, environmental conservation, and overall economic transformation. It emphasizes the need for stronger domestic utilization of electricity, particularly to support irrigation, agricultural productivity, and rural livelihoods.
The publication also explores Nepal's water-energy-agriculture nexus, proposing practical solutions to strengthen the agricultural sector through expanded irrigation infrastructure, reliable electricity for irrigation pumps, improved rural roads, better access to fertilizers, crop and livestock insurance, and affordable agricultural financing.
Another key theme of the book is institutional reform. It critically assesses existing water governance systems, identifies policy and implementation gaps, and advocates for evidence-based decision-making that better reflects the needs of farmers and local communities.
Recognizing the growing impacts of climate change, the book discusses risks associated with glacier retreat, changing hydrological patterns, water security, and the long-term sustainability of Nepal's water resources. It calls for integrated planning and climate-resilient strategies to safeguard the country's water future.
The book has received positive remarks from experts. Dr. Umesh Nath Parajuli describes it as a significant contribution for examining Nepal's water-energy-agriculture paradox, while Dr. Mahendra Bahadur Gurung has praised it as "a brilliant book and an inspiring work."
