Lalitpur, Dec 17 - Prime Minister Sushila Karki has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to good governance and the timely conduct of elections, describing them as the administration’s two core priorities at present.
Addressing the 107th establishment day of Lalitpur Metropolitan City on Tuesday, the Prime Minister said the government is intensifying preparations to hold the House of Representatives (HoR) election scheduled for March 5, 2026. She noted that the preparations are being carried out amid the special political and social circumstances that emerged following the September 8-9 Gen Z movement.
“The government is eager to transfer executive authority to a new government formed through the people’s mandate,” Prime Minister Karki said. Calling for collective responsibility, she urged political parties, civil society, and citizens to contribute from their respective roles to ensure the election is free, fair, impartial, transparent, and cost-effective. She stressed that elections remain the only constitutional and democratic means to advance the country toward stability, democratic values, and good governance.
The Prime Minister also warned against anarchic and unlawful activities, stating that the security agencies are capable and vigilant in maintaining peace and order. “Those who attempt to undermine social harmony or engage in criminal activities will be dealt with according to the law,” she said, adding that community cooperation is equally crucial in countering destabilising forces.
Highlighting the role of citizens, she appealed for unity in building a peaceful society as the foundation of good governance.
On the occasion, Lalitpur Metropolitan City Mayor Chiri Babu Maharjan called on Gen Z groups to play a constructive role in making the upcoming elections successful. Deputy Mayor Manjali Shakya Bajracharya reflected on the collective contributions of people from diverse sectors that have shaped Lalitpur into its present form.
As part of the celebrations, Rato Bangala School and Nira Rajyalaxmi Rana were honoured as the highest taxpayers of the metropolis, recognising their contribution to the city’s economic development.
The event brought together local representatives, community leaders, and stakeholders, underscoring the role of local governments in strengthening democratic processes and promoting accountable governance.
