FIG Regional Conference 2024 Concludes in Kathmandu, Charting Pathways for Climate-Responsive Land Governance

Kathmandu, Nepal – November 16, 2024

The FIG Regional Conference 2024, held under the theme Climate Responsive Land Governance and Disaster Resilience: Safeguarding Land Rights, successfully concluded on November 16, 2024, in Kathmandu. Co-hosted by the International Federation of Surveyors (FIG) and the Nepal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (NICS), the conference emphasized the critical need for sustainable land use, disaster resilience, and climate adaptation strategies. The event was supported by prominent partners, including The World Bank and UN-Habitat, alongside Nepal's government agencies and private sector leaders.

Key Outcomes and Highlights

1. Adoption of a Call to Action:
The conference concluded with a landmark Call to Action urging multistakeholder collaboration to safeguard land rights and strengthen disaster resilience. Delegates committed to integrating land governance into global climate strategies to address increasing vulnerabilities and ensure food security.

2. Knowledge Sharing and Innovations:
Experts shared insights on how land tenure security and adaptive governance can mitigate the impacts of climate change. Technological advancements in land mapping and disaster response were highlighted as game-changing solutions for fostering sustainable development.

3. Spotlight on Nepal’s Role:
Hosting the conference positioned Nepal as a leader in regional climate action and disaster risk management. Delegates were inspired by Nepal's approach to balancing development with environmental preservation amidst its diverse ecological and cultural heritage.

Diane A Dumashie, FIG President, called the event a milestone in advancing the sustainable development goals (SDGs). “This conference has demonstrated the power of global collaboration in navigating megatrends like climate change and biodiversity loss,” she remarked.

Ganesh Prasad Bhatta, Co-Chair of the Local Organizing Committee, extended gratitude to the international delegates, emphasizing that the discussions would have a lasting impact on land governance policies worldwide. "The shared ideas and commitments from this conference will guide us toward building resilient societies," he said.
