Kathmandu, Nepal - The Asia-GCC Dialogue on implementing the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly, and Regular Migration (GCM) commenced today in Kathmandu, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders to address critical issues in migration governance.
The two-day event gathers representatives from governments, international organizations, regional consultative processes such as the Abu Dhabi Dialogue, and non-state actors from Asia and the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) region. With a focus on collaboration and innovation, the dialogue aims to promote safe, dignified, and accessible migration practices.
Key Discussion Points:
Expanding Regular Migration Pathways: Developing accessible and transparent systems to facilitate lawful migration.
Fair Recruitment Practices: Ensuring ethical and equitable employment opportunities for migrant workers.
Skill Recognition and Capacity Building: Promoting the acknowledgment of skills and qualifications across borders.
Migrant Welfare and Rights: Strengthening support systems for migrants’ safety and well-being.
This event builds on the outcomes of previous engagements, including the GCM regional reviews conducted in 2023, and underscores the importance of inclusive, evidence-based, and people-centric migration policies.
Inaugurating the event, officials emphasized the critical role of partnerships in achieving the objectives of the GCM and fostering cooperation between the sending and receiving countries. “Migration, when managed effectively, is a bridge to opportunity and development for individuals and nations alike,” said a representative from the Ministry of Labour, Employment, and Social Security (MoLESS) Nepal.
Participants are expected to develop practical and solutions-oriented recommendations that align with the GCM’s goals, focusing on fostering trust and shared responsibility among stakeholders.
This dialogue is a crucial step toward creating a future where migration serves as a pathway to empowerment, opportunity, and dignity for millions worldwide.
