Kathmandu – In a historic move to celebrate the legacy of Everest climbers and promote adventure tourism, Nepal is set to host the world’s first international conference of Everest summiteers, aptly named the “Everest Summiteers’ Summit.” Scheduled for May 27, this groundbreaking event is being organized by Everest Alliance Nepal and is expected to bring together climbers from across the globe.
According to Sudarsan Nepal, president of Everest Alliance Nepal, this is the first time such a conference is being held in Nepal, the home of the world’s tallest peak, Mount Everest. He revealed that 177 climbers from 16 countries have already registered, and the event is expected to host a total of 500 climbers who have successfully summited Everest.
Global Participation and Unique Highlights
The summit will feature participants from countries such as India, China, the United States, the United Kingdom, Italy, Switzerland, Norway, Iran, Singapore, Australia, Lebanon, Morocco, and the UAE. One of the major highlights will be the participation of climbers spanning 71 years of Everest’s climbing history. Record-setting climbers, including those with unique abilities, will share their experiences, inspiring attendees with their stories of resilience and achievement.
Adding to the historic significance, Kancha Sherpa, one of the original members of the expedition team that summited Everest with Sir Edmund Hillary, will be honored at the event. This marks the first recognition of its kind in the seven-decade history of Everest climbing.
Focus on Climate Change and Mountain Challenges
The conference will also delve into the pressing issue of climate change and its impact on the Himalayan region. Extensive discussions and group sessions will be conducted with the participation of prominent organizations such as the World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF), the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). These discussions aim to address the challenges faced by the Himalayas and identify sustainable solutions.
Tourism and Economic Impacts
Tourism stakeholders believe that the Everest Summiteers’ Summit will not only position Nepal as a leading adventure tourism destination but also attract high-spending international visitors. Achyut Guragai, former president of the Nepal Association of Tour and Travel Agents (NATTA), emphasized that the event could serve as a milestone for promoting Nepal’s adventure tourism sector. “This summit will encourage more tourists to visit Nepal and significantly contribute to our tourism industry,” he stated.
The event’s success is being ensured through the collaboration of various tourism associations, including NATTA, the Trekking Agencies’ Association of Nepal (TAAN), the Nepal Mountaineering Association, and the Hotel Association of Nepal.
Conclusion
As the world’s first international gathering of Everest climbers, the Everest Summiteers’ Summit represents a significant step in celebrating Nepal’s rich mountaineering heritage while addressing critical global and regional challenges.
It is not only a tribute to the climbers who have achieved the extraordinary but also a platform to foster discussions on the future of adventure tourism and environmental sustainability in the Himalayan region.
