Kathmandu, May 18, 2025 - The Society of Transport Engineers Nepal (SOTEN), in collaboration with the Department of Roads, marked the 8th UN Global Road Safety Week with a knowledge-sharing session at the DoR Hall in Babarmal. The event, part of SOTEN’s 11th Knowledge Sharing Series, highlighted critical issues in Nepalese road signs, emphasizing their alignment - or lack thereof - with the 1968 UN Convention on Road Signs and Signals.
The session featured Er. Arjun Jung Thapa, Former Secretary of the Government of Nepal, as the keynote speaker. With years of expertise in transport and infrastructure, Thapa shed light on inconsistencies in Nepal's road signs and their implications for road safety, particularly for cyclists and pedestrians.
The theme of the session resonated with the global campaign for safer streets, represented by hashtags such as #MakeCyclingSafe and #MakeWalkingSafe. The discussion also underscored the importance of adapting international standards to Nepal's unique context, promoting safer roads for all users.
The event, attended by engineers, policymakers, and road safety advocates, ran today afternoon offering insights and actionable recommendations to improve road safety in Nepal.
This initiative aligns with global efforts to reduce road accidents and fatalities, ensuring a safer, more inclusive transportation network in the country.
