Kathmandu, May 15, 2025 - The Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) International Coordination Council (ICC) successfully organized the "NRNA Global Conclave – 2025" on May 14, 2025, in Kathmandu. Held under the theme “Rights of NRNs, Foundation of National Prosperity,” the conclave brought together non-resident Nepalis (NRNs) from around the globe, high-ranking Nepali government officials, policy experts, and intellectuals to discuss critical issues shaping Nepal's future.
The event, inaugurated by Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli, saw participation from prominent political leaders, policymakers, and representatives of various sectors. Key topics included NRN citizenship rights, investment promotion, legal amendments, tourism development, and strategies to enhance Nepal's global engagement.
Major Resolutions and Recommendations
1. NRNA Development Fund:
The conclave emphasized the urgent need to expedite the implementation of the NPR 10 billion NRNA Development Fund, with amendments to increase the government-approved IPO allocation from 49% to 85%. Additionally, the conclave requested the government finalize directives for Foreign Currency IPOs to enhance financial participation from NRNs.
2. Non-Resident Nepali Citizenship:
Participants urged the government to implement non-resident Nepali citizenship rights guaranteed under Article 14 of the Constitution. They also called for amendments ensuring lifetime visa exemptions for NRNs.
3. Legal Reforms:
The conclave stressed the need for swift amendments to the NRNA Act to address legal and administrative challenges, with special consultations involving the NRNA.
4. Recognition of Persons of Nepali Origin (PNO):
A significant resolution called for recognizing over 500,000 people of Nepali origin in countries like Thailand, Myanmar, and Malaysia as NRNs, with legal provisions in the NRNA Act.
5. Gurkha Rights:
The government was urged to actively address the ongoing struggle of Gurkhas in the UK for equal rights.
6. Tourism Development:
Highlighting Nepal's potential as a global tourism hub, the conclave advocated for digital promotion, infrastructural improvements, and domestic airfare parity for NRNs.
7. Labor Migration and Social Security:
Mechanisms to secure the future of Nepalis in foreign employment and strategies to utilize their skills for Nepal's development were also prioritized.
8. Unity and Dispute Resolution within NRNA:
The conclave called for patience and dialogue amidst internal disputes, emphasizing unity and collective action to strengthen the NRNA's global influence.
Looking Ahead
The event concluded with a strong commitment to implementing the resolutions and preparing for the NRNA's 12th International General Assembly, scheduled for October 11–14, 2025.
The NRNA expressed gratitude to all stakeholders, including the Government of Nepal, for their support in making the conclave a success. By addressing the pressing needs and aspirations of NRNs, this event has set the stage for enhanced collaboration and development between NRNs and Nepal.
