Pokhara, May 14, 2025: A severe hailstorm accompanied by strong winds has caused significant disruption at the Institute of Forestry, Pokhara Campus. The storm, which struck on 31st Baisakh 2082, affected daily academic and administrative activities, raising concerns among students and staff.
The storm toppled several trees on the campus premises, one of which fell onto the roof of the building housing the Exam Controller’s Office. This has further complicated academic operations, as the office plays a crucial role in facilitating examinations for Bachelor’s and Master’s students. The storm also caused mobility issues, with debris and fallen trees blocking pathways.
Adding to the challenges, the campus is plagued by a longstanding drainage problem. The narrow and poorly managed drainage system that passes through the campus from Buddha Chowk in Pokhara Municipality Ward No. 15 overflows every monsoon season, turning into a recurring nuisance. Despite repeated appeals to the authorities, no effective solution has been implemented.
The stagnant water and waste from the drainage system have created unhygienic conditions, leading to concerns about possible health risks for students and staff. The foul smell and unsanitary environment have made it difficult to conduct classes and administrative work effectively.
Campus officials and stakeholders are urging local authorities to take immediate and long-term action to resolve the drainage issue and prevent such disruptions in the future. With the monsoon season approaching, swift measures are essential to ensure that the campus can continue its academic and administrative operations without hindrance.
The recent hailstorm has highlighted the urgent need for a robust disaster management plan and infrastructure improvements to safeguard the academic environment of the Institute of Forestry.
