Kathmandu, Nepal - Continuous rainfall since last night has disrupted transportation along several major national highways in Nepal, with landslides, mud, and accumulated debris obstructing road sections in different locations.
Authorities have mobilised necessary manpower and heavy equipment to clear the obstructions and restore traffic as soon as possible. The Department of Roads and its subordinate divisional offices under the Ministry of Infrastructure Development are actively working to reopen the affected road sections.
According to the latest update, three major road corridors have been affected:
BP Highway:
Several sections of the BP Highway, including Pinthali, have been blocked due to the accumulation of mud, sediment, and debris. Clearance operations are underway to remove the deposited materials and restore traffic movement.
Kanti Highway:
While the Makwanpur section of the Kanti Highway remains operational, several locations in the Lalitpur section, including Chhapeli, have been obstructed. Relevant authorities are working to clear the blockages and resume transportation services.
Maldhunga-Beni-Jomsom Road:
Multiple sections of the Maldhunga-Beni-Jomsom road corridor, including Lamakhet, Mahabhir, Kagbeni, Chhusang, and Chhoser, have also been obstructed. Manpower and equipment have been deployed to clear the affected sections.
However, as rainfall continues, authorities have stated that traffic operations along the affected sections will resume only after assessing prevailing weather conditions and road safety.
The Department of Roads and its divisional offices are continuing clearance and restoration efforts, with the objective of reopening the obstructed highways at the earliest possible time.
Public Safety Advisory
Travellers and commuters are advised to remain alert, follow official traffic updates, and avoid unnecessary journeys through affected road sections until conditions improve. Continuous rainfall can increase the risk of landslides, falling rocks, flash floods, and further road blockages, particularly along mountainous highways.
The situation highlights the vulnerability of Nepal's road infrastructure to extreme weather events and the importance of climate-resilient infrastructure, effective disaster preparedness, and timely emergency response.
