China and Nepal Explore Cooperation on Transboundary Biodiversity Conservation

Kathmandu, October 13, 2026 - A workshop on Potential Cross-Border Protected Areas and Other Effective Area-Based Conservation Measures (OECMs): Cooperation and Collaboration Mechanisms between China and Nepal was held today at the National Trust for Nature Conservation (NTNC), bringing together conservation experts and representatives from Nepal and China to explore opportunities for strengthening transboundary biodiversity conservation.
The workshop brought together delegates from the Chinese Research Academy of Environmental Sciences and Shan Shui Conservation Center, China, alongside representatives from the UKALI project and NTNC. The gathering provided a platform for sharing experiences, exchanging knowledge and discussing potential areas of collaboration between the two neighbouring countries in protecting biodiversity and promoting nature conservation across borders.
Discussions focused on exploring possible cooperation mechanisms for cross-border protected areas and OECMs, which can contribute to conserving biodiversity beyond formally designated protected areas. Such approaches can support landscape-level conservation, strengthen ecological connectivity and encourage coordinated efforts to address shared environmental challenges.
Nepal and China share ecologically significant landscapes across the Himalayan region, where biodiversity, wildlife habitats and mountain ecosystems extend across national boundaries. Collaborative conservation approaches can help improve the protection of these interconnected ecosystems while encouraging knowledge-sharing, scientific cooperation and stronger institutional partnerships.
The workshop offered an opportunity for participating institutions to exchange perspectives and identify potential pathways for future collaboration. Continued dialogue and cooperation among conservation agencies, research institutions and civil society organisations could help advance effective, science-based approaches to biodiversity conservation in the region.
As countries work towards global biodiversity targets, including the Kunming–Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, cooperation on transboundary conservation and OECMs can play an important role in supporting long-term ecosystem protection and ecological resilience.
The workshop marks an opportunity to strengthen engagement between Nepalese and Chinese conservation institutions and explore practical mechanisms for safeguarding shared natural heritage. Any future initiatives will depend on continued dialogue, institutional coordination and the development of mutually agreed conservation priorities.
