A One-Horned Rhino Finds a Quiet Moment in Chitwan’s Kumroj Wetland

Chitwan, Nepal: A striking wildlife moment has been captured in Nepal’s Chitwan, where a greater one-horned rhinoceros is seen enjoying the waters of a lake located in the middle of the Kumroj Buffer Zone Community Forest.
The image shows the rhino partially submerged in the calm lake, with a cattle egret perched on its back-an intimate glimpse of the close ecological relationships found within Chitwan’s forest and wetland habitats.
The lake and surrounding forest provide important habitat for wildlife in the buffer zone, which forms part of the broader landscape surrounding Chitwan National Park. Wetlands and water bodies are particularly important for wildlife during hot periods, providing drinking water, opportunities for bathing and cooling, and habitat for numerous birds and other aquatic species.
The presence of the egret alongside the rhino also highlights the complex interactions between species in Nepal’s lowland ecosystems. Such natural scenes demonstrate why protecting forests, wetlands and wildlife corridors around protected areas is essential for maintaining biodiversity.
