YEREVAN, Armenia - The 2026 United Nations Biodiversity Conference, including the 17th meeting of the Conference of the Parties to the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD COP17), will bring governments and stakeholders together in Yerevan, Armenia, from 19 to 30 October 2026 under the slogan “Taking Action for Nature.” The conference comes at a critical stage in global efforts to halt and reverse biodiversity loss and implement the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KMGBF).
A central feature of COP17 will be the first global review of collective progress in implementing the KMGBF, adopted in 2022. Parties will assess progress toward its 23 global targets, providing an important opportunity to identify achievements, implementation gaps and areas where action needs to accelerate before the 2030 deadline. National reports submitted by countries will form a key evidence base for this review; the CBD reported in March that 125 Parties, nearly two-thirds of the 196 Parties to the Convention, had submitted their seventh national reports.
Biodiversity finance is expected to remain a major issue. Discussions will address the resources and implementation support required to translate international commitments into practical action, alongside stronger cooperation among governments, institutions and other stakeholders. Equally important will be discussions on access to genetic resources and the fair and equitable sharing of benefits, including issues addressed through the Nagoya Protocol.
COP17 will also place emphasis on inclusive participation and the role of Indigenous Peoples and local communities, whose knowledge, stewardship and participation are important to biodiversity conservation and implementation of the Global Biodiversity Framework. Ecosystem restoration, protected and conserved areas, monitoring, accountability and translating global biodiversity commitments into measurable national action are also expected to feature prominently.
The conference will take place alongside the 12th meeting of the Parties to the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (CP-MOP-12) and the 6th meeting of the Parties to the Nagoya Protocol on Access and Benefit-sharing (NP-MOP-6).
The CBD has also announced a Biodiversity Technology and Innovation Expo during COP17, showcasing technologies and innovations intended to support biodiversity conservation, sustainable use and implementation of the KMGBF.
For the global biodiversity agenda, Yerevan will therefore be more than another negotiating conference. It will provide an opportunity to examine what has been achieved since the adoption of the KMGBF, where implementation remains insufficient, and what additional action is needed to meet the 2030 biodiversity targets.
The conference’s message-“Taking Action for Nature”-reflects the shift from global commitments toward implementation, accountability and tangible outcomes for nature and people.
