El Niño is not simply a forecast-it is a climate phenomenon that scientists continuously monitor using observations from across the planet and sophisticated climate models that help estimate how conditions in the tropical Pacific may evolve over the coming months.
The World Meteorological Organization (WMO) says improved seasonal forecast systems can now provide useful predictions of climate patterns one to six months in advance, offering valuable time for governments, humanitarian agencies and climate-sensitive sectors to prepare for potential impacts.
🌊 How is El Niño monitored?
Scientists rely on a global observing system involving satellites, ocean buoys, research vessels and atmospheric measurements collected by National Meteorological and Hydrological Services and international partners.
These systems continuously monitor key indicators including:
- 🌡️ Sea-surface temperatures
- 🌬️ Winds and atmospheric circulation
- 🌧️ Rainfall
- 📉 Air pressure
- 🌊 Ocean heat content
These observations are combined with numerical climate models to assess whether the tropical Pacific is moving toward El Niño, La Niña or ENSO-neutral conditions.
📊 The Oceanic Niño Index
One of the principal indicators used to monitor ENSO is the Oceanic Niño Index (ONI). It tracks the three-month average sea-surface-temperature anomaly in the Niño 3.4 region of the equatorial Pacific.
Persistent warmer-than-average conditions indicate El Niño, while cooler-than-average conditions indicate La Niña. The ONI therefore provides an important measure of the oceanic component of the El Niño–Southern Oscillation (ENSO).
🌍 Why scientists are also looking at RONI
As the world's oceans continue to warm because of climate change, researchers are also examining the Relative Oceanic Niño Index (RONI).
Rather than looking only at how warm or cool the Niño 3.4 region is compared with its historical average, RONI considers the Niño 3.4 temperature relative to conditions across the broader tropical oceans. This can help scientists distinguish ENSO-related variability from the background warming of the global ocean.
🔥 El Niño is already developing in 2026
The latest WMO assessments show that El Niño has developed in the tropical Pacific and is expected to strengthen during the coming months. WMO's July 2026 seasonal outlook indicated a rapid development toward a strong El Niño during July-September, while its latest August-October outlook continued to project strengthening conditions.
The August–October outlook also indicates a risk of above-normal temperatures globally, alongside substantial regional changes in rainfall-ncluding increased rainfall in some areas and elevated drought risk in others.
This matters because El Niño can alter atmospheric circulation far beyond the Pacific, affecting the likelihood of heatwaves, drought, heavy rainfall and other climate extremes in different parts of the world.

The World Meteorological Organization has announced that its next El Niño/La Niña Update will be released on 3 September 2026. The update is expected to provide the latest authoritative assessment of the event's development and potential global climate implications.
