Tamor Corridor Closed After Floodwaters Submerge Road in Panchthar

Phidim, July 9 - Continuous monsoon rainfall has disrupted transportation in eastern Nepal after floodwaters from the Nawa Khola submerged a section of the Tamor Corridor, forcing the closure of the strategic highway connecting Sunsari, Dhankuta, Panchthar, and Taplejung.
The road, widely regarded as a vital transport corridor linking Dharan to the eastern hill districts, has remained impassable since approximately 5:30 a.m. on Thursday. The flooding occurred at Nawa Khola in Tumbewa Rural Municipality-2, Panchthar, where a sudden rise in the river's water level inundated the roadway, bringing all vehicular movement to a halt. The Tamor Corridor forms part of Nepal's National Highway 06 (NH-06), an important route connecting the eastern hills with the Terai.
According to the District Police Office, Panchthar, the highway has been temporarily closed due to the high water flow, which has made travel unsafe. Authorities have urged motorists and passengers to avoid attempting to cross the flooded section until conditions improve.
The disruption has affected both passenger and freight transportation, leaving vehicles stranded on both sides of the flooded roadway and impacting travel to and from Panchthar, Dhankuta, and Taplejung.
With rainfall continuing across the region, officials have warned that river levels could rise further. Residents living near rivers and streams, as well as travelers, have been advised to remain vigilant and monitor weather and road conditions before undertaking non-essential journeys.
Authorities said the road will be inspected and reopened only after floodwaters recede and safety assessments confirm that traffic can resume.
