A regional workshop focused on strengthening pangolin conservation efforts across South Asia has officially commenced with a warm opening reception, bringing together a diverse group of stakeholders committed to protecting one of the world's most trafficked mammal species.
The four-day Regional Workshop on Pangolin Conservation in South Asia (RWPC 2026) has convened conservation policymakers, wildlife law enforcement officials, scientists, researchers, and conservation practitioners from across the region. The gathering aims to foster collaboration, share knowledge and experiences, and develop coordinated strategies to address the growing threats faced by pangolins.
Participants highlighted the importance of regional cooperation in combating illegal wildlife trade, improving conservation policies, strengthening enforcement mechanisms, and enhancing scientific research related to pangolin populations and habitats. The workshop provides a valuable platform for stakeholders to exchange best practices and identify opportunities for joint action to safeguard pangolins across national boundaries.
Organized with the support of key conservation partners, including the IUCN Pangolin Specialist Group, SAWEN (South Asia Wildlife Enforcement Network), the U.S. Department of State, the Pangolin Crisis Fund, and Save Pangolins, the event reflects a shared commitment to reversing the decline of pangolin populations in South Asia.
The opening reception was marked by a spirit of collaboration and optimism, setting a positive tone for the days ahead. Participants expressed enthusiasm for advancing regional partnerships and developing practical conservation measures that can contribute to the long-term survival of pangolins in the wild.
As discussions continue over the coming days, the workshop is expected to generate important recommendations and collective actions aimed at strengthening pangolin conservation efforts throughout South Asia, a region that remains critical for the protection of several pangolin species.
