Kathmandu, Nepal - Operations at Tribhuvan International Airport were temporarily suspended on Monday morning after a wheel fire occurred on a Turkish Airlines aircraft during landing.
According to airport authorities, the incident took place while Turkish Airlines flight TK 726 was landing in Kathmandu after arriving from Istanbul, Turkey. The aircraft reportedly experienced a fire in one of its wheels during the landing process, prompting airport officials to immediately halt flight operations as a precautionary safety measure.
Acting General Manager of the airport, Tek Nath Sitoula, informed that the airport remained closed from approximately 6:45 a.m. and resumed operations after around one and a half hours. Following the reopening, scheduled international flights gradually resumed, including arrivals by Air India and Flydubai.
Airport Security Office Superintendent of Police Rajkumar Silwal stated that emergency response teams quickly brought the situation under control with the assistance of airport fire services. The aircraft was stopped on the runway, and all passengers were safely evacuated through the emergency exits.
Authorities confirmed that the aircraft was carrying 273 passengers along with 11 crew members at the time of the incident. No casualties or serious injuries have been reported.
The temporary closure caused short-term disruption to flight schedules at Nepal’s only international gateway, highlighting the importance of rapid emergency response and aviation safety preparedness at busy international airports.
Airport authorities are expected to conduct further technical assessment of the aircraft and runway operations following the incident.
