100 MW Super Trishuli Hydropower Project Advances as Key Run-of-River Energy Initiative

Kathmandu, Nepal - Construction of the 100 MW Super Trishuli Hydropower Project is progressing along the banks of the Trishuli River, strategically located between the districts of Gorkha and Chitwan. The project is emerging as a significant addition to Nepal’s expanding portfolio of clean energy infrastructure.
Designed under the Run-of-River (RoR) model, the project utilizes the natural flow of the river to generate electricity without the need for large-scale water storage. This approach reduces the environmental footprint compared to conventional reservoir-based hydropower, while still contributing to reliable power generation, particularly during high-flow seasons.
Energy experts view the Super Trishuli project as a crucial step toward strengthening Nepal’s domestic electricity supply and reducing reliance on fossil fuels. With Nepal’s hydropower potential estimated at over 40,000 MW of economically viable capacity, projects like this play a vital role in translating natural resources into sustainable economic growth.
However, like many infrastructure projects in mountainous regions, the development also faces challenges. Seasonal variations in river flow, geological complexities, and the need for careful environmental management remain key considerations. Ensuring community engagement and minimizing ecological disruption will be critical as construction advances.
Once completed, the Super Trishuli Hydropower Project is expected to contribute significantly to the national grid, supporting both domestic consumption and potential energy exports. It also aligns with Nepal’s broader commitment to clean energy development and climate resilience.
As Nepal continues to prioritize hydropower as a cornerstone of its energy strategy, the progress of projects like Super Trishuli highlights the country’s ongoing transition toward a more sustainable and energy-secure future.
