EU, NHRC, and UNODC Launch National Report on Human Trafficking in Nepal

Kathmandu - The “Trafficking in Persons in Nepal: National Report” was officially launched today through a joint initiative involving the European Union, Nepal’s national human rights body, and the United Nations.
The event was attended by Jose Luis Vinuesa-Santamaria, Head of Cooperation and Chargé d’Affaires of the European Union Delegation to Nepal, alongside representatives from the National Human Rights Commission Nepal and the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime.
The newly launched national report highlights the persistent challenges of human trafficking and migrant smuggling in Nepal, identifying them as grave human rights violations. These crimes continue to disproportionately affect vulnerable populations, particularly women, girls, and children, who are often subjected to exploitation both within and outside the country.
Officials emphasized that evidence-based research, such as this comprehensive report, plays a crucial role in shaping effective policies and interventions. The findings are expected to support government agencies, civil society, and international partners in strengthening prevention strategies, enhancing victim protection mechanisms, and improving prosecution efforts against traffickers.
The European Union reiterated its commitment to working collaboratively across South Asia to combat trafficking in persons and the smuggling of migrants. Through regional partnerships, the EU is supporting governments in promoting safer and more regulated migration pathways, while ensuring the protection and dignity of affected individuals.
Stakeholders at the event underscored the importance of coordinated action, data-driven policymaking, and sustained international cooperation to address the root causes of trafficking and to safeguard human rights in Nepal.
