China Builds 2,900-Foot Mountain Escalator to Boost Tourism Access

China, March 27, 2026 - In a striking example of modern tourism infrastructure, China has constructed a mountain escalator system stretching approximately 2,900 feet to help visitors access scenic viewpoints in rugged terrain.
The escalator significantly reduces travel time for tourists, cutting what would traditionally be a one-hour uphill climb to roughly twenty minutes. Authorities say such projects are part of broader efforts to make natural attractions more accessible, particularly for elderly visitors and those with limited mobility.
Engineering experts note that building escalators on steep mountain slopes presents unique challenges. The system must be designed to withstand changing weather conditions, temperature fluctuations, and heavy tourist traffic, while also ensuring structural stability, proper drainage, and reliable safety mechanisms.
The development reflects China’s continued investment in tourism infrastructure. In recent years, the country has expanded facilities such as cable cars, glass walkways, and high-altitude viewing platforms to attract both domestic and international visitors to remote and scenic regions.
However, the project has also sparked debate. Supporters argue that improved access democratizes travel and boosts local economies, while critics warn that large-scale construction in fragile mountain ecosystems may lead to environmental degradation if not carefully managed.
As China continues to develop its tourism sector, balancing economic growth with environmental sustainability remains a central challenge for policymakers and stakeholders.
