Policy Dialogue Highlights Need to Align Trade and Nutrition Policies in Nepal

A policy dialogue titled “Linking Trade, Food and Nutrition Security in Nepal” was organized by South Asia Watch on Trade, Economics and Environment on March 26, 2026, in Kathmandu, bringing renewed attention to the intersection of trade, fiscal policy, and nutrition outcomes in the country.
The dialogue was convened to share findings from a recent SAWTEE study examining how Nepal’s trade and fiscal policies can be better aligned with national food and nutrition security objectives. The study was conducted under the South Asian Coalition for Improved Nutrition initiative, with support from the International Development Research Centre.
Participants highlighted that despite ongoing policy efforts, gaps remain in ensuring coherence between trade liberalization, taxation, and nutrition-sensitive policies. The discussion underscored the need for integrated approaches that address food affordability, availability, and nutritional quality simultaneously.
The event brought together policymakers, researchers, development partners, and other stakeholders to critically examine the study’s findings and identify actionable strategies. Emphasis was placed on strengthening institutional coordination and promoting evidence-based policymaking to build a more resilient and inclusive food system.
Experts at the dialogue noted that aligning fiscal and trade policies with nutrition goals is crucial for ensuring equitable access to safe and nutritious food, particularly for vulnerable populations. The dialogue also contributed to broader national and regional efforts to adopt a food systems approach that integrates economic, health, and environmental dimensions.
The outcomes of the discussion are expected to inform future policy directions and support Nepal’s ongoing efforts to enhance food system resilience amid evolving economic and global challenges.
