Kathmandu - Leading global experts in forestry, conservation, and climate science gathered in Bangkok from March 11-13 to advance the revision of biodiversity guidelines for tropical timber production forests. The initiative, jointly led by the International Tropical Timber Organization and the International Union for Conservation of Nature, reflects a growing international push to align forest management with evolving environmental and climate priorities.
The updated guidelines aim to move beyond traditional conservation approaches by emphasizing landscape-scale biodiversity management, extending protection efforts outside designated protected areas. Experts highlighted that conserving biodiversity within production forests is essential, particularly in tropical regions where economic activities and ecological systems are closely intertwined.
A key feature of the revision process is the integration of climate change considerations and the latest scientific knowledge. This includes addressing how tropical forests can better adapt to climate impacts while continuing to support livelihoods dependent on timber and forest resources.
The guidelines are also being aligned with the global targets set under the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework, ensuring consistency with international biodiversity commitments. According to organizers, the revised guidelines-expected to be released in late 2026 or early 2027-will serve as a practical tool for policymakers, forest managers, and local communities.
