Nepal Observes World Meteorological Day Emphasizing Climate Awareness and Early Warning Systems

Kathmandu, March 23 - Nepal marked World Meteorological Day today with a series of awareness programs and discussions under the global theme, “Today’s Observation, Tomorrow’s Safety,” highlighting the growing importance of weather and climate services in a changing world.
The day commemorates the establishment of the World Meteorological Organization in 1950 and has been observed globally since 1961. In Nepal, the occasion is being used to strengthen public understanding of meteorological science and its critical role in safeguarding lives and livelihoods.
According to officials from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology, this year’s observance focuses on enhancing awareness about modern forecasting systems, improving early warning mechanisms, and promoting strategies to reduce climate-related risks. Meteorologist Sujan Subedi noted that discussions and outreach activities have been designed to inform citizens about how accurate weather forecasts can support disaster preparedness and resilience.
Experts emphasize that reliable weather and climate services are increasingly vital for countries like Nepal, which are highly vulnerable to climate-induced hazards such as floods, landslides, and erratic rainfall. Strengthening forecasting capacity and ensuring timely dissemination of information can significantly reduce the impact of such disasters, particularly in rural and mountainous regions.
Beyond disaster risk reduction, meteorological services play a key role in sectors such as agriculture, water resource management, aviation, and public health. As climate variability intensifies, the demand for precise, accessible, and community-centered weather information continues to grow.
Globally, World Meteorological Day serves as a reminder of the need for coordinated scientific efforts and international cooperation to address the challenges posed by climate change. In Nepal, the day reinforces the urgency of investing in technology, data systems, and public awareness to build a more climate-resilient future.
