Young Scientist Leads Eco-Friendly Pest Control Awareness in Bharatpur

Bharatpur, Nepal - A young agriculture scientist, Nisha Subedi, is gaining attention for her grassroots initiative promoting sustainable farming practices in rural communities of Bharatpur. Through a free public awareness campaign, she is educating farmers on eco-friendly pest management techniques, encouraging a shift away from harmful chemical pesticides.
Subedi, affiliated with the Agriculture and Forestry University, has been actively engaging with local farmers, demonstrating practical and low-cost biological alternatives that help protect crops while preserving soil health and biodiversity. Her campaign focuses on reducing dependency on synthetic chemicals, which have long-term environmental and health impacts.
A significant milestone in her academic and field research includes the identification of Metarhizium rileyi (locally known as “Dhusi”) in Nepal. This naturally occurring fungus is highly effective in controlling armyworm infestations, one of the major threats to crop production. Her discovery is considered a promising breakthrough in the application of biological pest control methods within the country.
Local farmers participating in her awareness sessions have expressed growing interest in adopting these eco-friendly solutions, noting both economic and environmental benefits. Experts believe such initiatives are crucial for advancing sustainable agriculture in Nepal, particularly as the country faces increasing challenges from climate change and soil degradation.
