Students Lead Cashew Cultivation Initiative in Sindhuli, Showing New Path for Agricultural Education

Sindhuli, Nepal - In a quiet hillside of Dudhouli Municipality-9 in Sindhuli district, students of Namuna Secondary School are demonstrating how education and agriculture can work hand in hand. What began four years ago as a small experiment has now produced tangible results, with the school harvesting more than 50 kilograms of cashew nuts grown entirely on Nepali soil.
The cashew saplings were initially brought from India and planted within the school premises as part of a practical agricultural learning program. Today, those plants have matured enough to show commercial promise, challenging the widespread belief that cashew cultivation is unsuitable for Nepal’s climate.
Unlike conventional classroom-based learning, the school has integrated cashew farming into hands-on agricultural education. Students are involved in plantation, care, harvesting, and basic processing, allowing them to gain direct experience in crop management and value-chain understanding.
Encouraged by the successful yield, the school has expanded the initiative by starting cashew seedling production. This move not only supports learning but also opens the possibility of supplying saplings to local farmers. School authorities believe this could help diversify farming practices in Dudhouli, an area traditionally dependent on limited crop varieties.
Local educators and agricultural observers say the initiative reflects the importance of school-based innovation in addressing broader challenges such as youth disengagement from farming, import dependency on dry fruits, and limited exposure to climate-resilient crops. Cashew, known for its tolerance to dry conditions, could offer farmers an alternative income source in regions facing erratic rainfall.
The school now envisions Dudhouli evolving into a localized cashew production zone, though they acknowledge that technical support, research, and market linkage will be crucial for long-term success.
At a time when many young people are moving away from agriculture, the experience of Namuna Secondary School stands as a practical example of how education, innovation, and local resources can come together to create new agricultural possibilities in Nepal.
