Asphalt Ring Road Enhances Connectivity and Local Economy in Mustang

Mustang, Nepal - A newly completed asphalt-paved ring road in Mustang has significantly improved connectivity, local livelihoods, and tourism mobility in one of Nepal’s most scenic yet remote regions.
The 10.5-kilometre Thak Five Villages Ring Road connects Jomsom with Thini, Dhumba, Chhairo, Marpha, and Chimang in Gharpajhong Rural Municipality–4. The project was implemented by the Infrastructure Development Office under the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport of Gandaki Province.
Local residents say the road has eased long-standing transportation challenges. Farmers are now able to transport apples, vegetables, and other agricultural products to markets more efficiently, reducing costs and post-harvest losses. The improved access has strengthened market linkages and opened new economic opportunities for smallholder farmers in the area.
Tourism, a key pillar of Mustang’s economy, has also benefited. The smoother road network has made travel more comfortable and reliable for both domestic and international visitors, improving access to culturally rich villages and traditional settlements along the Kali Gandaki corridor.
Beyond economic gains, the ring road has enhanced daily mobility for local communities, improving access to education, healthcare, and essential services. Residents describe the project as a meaningful step toward balanced development that respects Mustang’s unique geography and cultural landscape.
As infrastructure development continues in Nepal’s mountain regions, projects like the Thak Five Villages Ring Road highlight how targeted investment in rural connectivity can support sustainable tourism, strengthen local economies, and improve quality of life without compromising the region’s identity.
