Kathmandu, Feb 4, 2026 – In a significant show of community participation, school children in Kathmandu today morning organized an awareness rally to mark World Cancer Day. The march, which began from [insert known starting point if available] and passed through major streets of the city, aimed to raise public understanding about cancer prevention, early detection, and healthy lifestyle choices.
World Cancer Day, observed globally on February 4 each year, focuses on educating communities about cancer and encouraging actions to reduce risk factors. The theme this year highlights collective efforts in cancer prevention and access to care, reinforcing calls for greater investment in health services and community awareness programs.
Hundreds of students from various schools participated in the rally holding placards and slogans that emphasized key cancer prevention messages including the importance of a balanced diet, physical activity, and regular health screenings. Teachers and volunteers accompanied the students, guiding them and explaining to onlookers the significance of cancer awareness.
Health experts note that cancer is one of the leading causes of death worldwide and that early detection significantly improves chances of successful treatment. They stress the need for regular health check-ups and lifestyle changes such as reducing tobacco use and improving diet to help reduce cancer risk.
Speaking to Ecosphere News, one of the participating teachers said that engaging young people in such awareness programs helps foster a culture of health responsibility from an early age. “When children learn about prevention and healthy habits, they take those lessons home, helping spread awareness beyond the school environment,” she added.
World Cancer Day events in Nepal also include health talks at community centers and screening campaigns in partnership with health organizations. Experts continue to call for expanded access to screening and treatment services, particularly in rural areas where healthcare access remains limited.
Ecosphere News reached out to school organizers for further comments on community involvement and future awareness activities. Details are expected to follow as the day’s programs continue across the city.
