Bhutan’s Green Leap: Nearly 80% Organic Farming, Tourism Blossoms Amid Push to Become World’s First Fully Organic Nation

Thimphu - In a landmark stride toward sustainable development, Bhutan is emerging as a global leader in organic agriculture, with approximately 80 percent of its cultivable land now dedicated to fully organic farming-a dramatic shift that is reshaping both its rural economy and tourism sector.
The Himalayan kingdom has long aspired to become the world’s first 100 percent organic nation, a vision that has drawn international attention for its ambitious protection of soil health, biodiversity, and human well-being. Though the government has adjusted the timeline to completely ban chemical fertilizers and pesticides until 2035, significant progress has already been achieved through policy support and grassroots transformation.
Policy Support and Farmer Empowerment
Bhutan’s agricultural policies have focused on empowering farmers to transition from conventional inputs to natural alternatives. Under this initiative:
Farmers receive special subsidies for adopting organic practices.
Government programs provide training in the preparation and use of compost and farmyard manure, reducing dependence on synthetic chemicals.
Innovative extension services support on-farm organic certification and quality assurance.
Agricultural officials emphasize that the agenda goes beyond organic output alone:
“Our goal is not only organic production but also protecting the health of soil and people,” they say, highlighting a holistic approach that values long-term ecological balance.
Tourism Boost: Agro and Wellness Travel on the Rise
Bhutan’s organic transformation is creating ripple effects beyond the farm gate. Tourists increasingly seek authentic, sustainable experiences-ranging from organic local cuisine to pristine natural landscapes-fueling growth in niche sectors such as:
Agro-tourism, where visitors engage with organic farming practices and rural lifestyles.
Wellness tourism, centered on eco-friendly retreats, organic food, and the kingdom’s emphasis on spiritual and physical wellbeing.
Industry observers say these trends are strengthening Bhutan’s tourism competitiveness while reinforcing its environmental brand.
Meeting Challenges, Inspiring the World
Despite clear progress, Bhutan’s transition to full organic status faces structural challenges-such as scaling organic inputs, market linkages, and ensuring quality assurance across diverse farming communities. However, the kingdom’s robust policy direction and community participation offer a powerful model of sustainable development.
Bhutan’s journey underscores a central lesson for the global community: environmentally responsible development can be compatible with economic opportunity and cultural identity.
As Bhutan continues on its pathway to 100 percent organic agriculture, the world watches a small nation offering big ideas for the future of food, health, and sustainable tourism.
