Kathmandu - The Society of Transport Engineers Nepal (SOTEN) participated as a National Collaborator in the National Capacity Building Workshop on Resilient, Sustainable, and Inclusive Transport in Nepal, a program aimed at strengthening institutional and technical capacity in Nepal’s transport sector.
The workshop was jointly organized by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UN ESCAP), the Ministry of Physical Infrastructure and Transport (MoPIT), and the Federation of Contractors’ Consultancy and Professional Transport Associations (FCCPTA). The event brought together policymakers, transport engineers, planners, development partners, and technical experts to deliberate on pathways for building a transport system that is resilient to climate risks, socially inclusive, and environmentally sustainable.
Discussions during the workshop focused on key challenges facing Nepal’s transport sector, including climate vulnerability, rapid urbanization, road safety, public transport efficiency, and the need for integrated planning. Participants emphasized the importance of adopting low-carbon transport solutions, strengthening public transport systems, and ensuring that transport infrastructure serves women, persons with disabilities, and marginalized communities.
As a national collaborator, SOTEN contributed technical perspectives from the engineering community, highlighting the need to align transport design, construction, and maintenance practices with sustainability principles and national development priorities. The workshop also underlined the importance of capacity building for government institutions and professionals to effectively implement resilient transport policies.
The event was supported through collaboration with the Society of Consulting Architectural and Engineering Firms, Nepal, reflecting a multi-stakeholder approach that connects policy, practice, and professional expertise.
The workshop outcomes are expected to inform future policy frameworks and technical interventions, supporting Nepal’s commitment to sustainable development, climate resilience, and inclusive mobility in line with regional and global transport agendas.
