Kathmandu, - Marking 50 years of German-Nepali technical cooperation, the German Agency for International Cooperation (GIZ) Nepal has reflected on the evolution of a partnership that has moved beyond projects to building systems capable of delivering lasting change.
Speaking on the milestone, Ms. Paulina Campos Monteros, Country Representative of GIZ Nepal, underscored a central lesson learned over five decades of collaboration: sustainable development takes root when innovative ideas are transformed into durable, scalable systems. According to her, the strength of the Germany-Nepal partnership lies in its long-term vision and its emphasis on institutionalization rather than short-term interventions.
Ms. Monteros highlighted that GIZ’s role in Nepal has gradually evolved from providing technical inputs to acting as a facilitator and connector among diverse actors. “We see ourselves as long-term partners, working hand-in-hand with government, civil society, the private sector and communities,” she said, adding that co-creation and shared ownership are essential for solutions to endure.
Over the past five decades, German-Nepali cooperation has supported Nepal across sectors such as governance, sustainable economic development, climate action, energy, health, and skills development, helping strengthen national capacities and local institutions. GIZ’s approach, Ms. Monteros noted, focuses on aligning innovation with policy frameworks so that successful practices can be scaled nationwide and sustained beyond project cycles.
As Nepal navigates complex development challenges-from climate vulnerability to inclusive economic growth-GIZ reaffirmed its commitment to supporting locally anchored, system-oriented solutions. The 50-year milestone, she said, is not only a moment of reflection, but also a forward-looking commitment to shaping resilient and inclusive pathways for the future.
Framed under the theme “Moving through time. Shaping tomorrow together,” the anniversary highlights the enduring partnership between Germany and Nepal-one that continues to adapt, innovate and collaborate in pursuit of sustainable development outcomes that last.
