Kathmandu/Beijing - Nepal’s Prime Minister K.P. Sharma Oli has returned home after what is being described as a “fruitful” official visit to China, marked by renewed commitments to economic cooperation, connectivity, and regional stability.
During his trip, Oli held bilateral talks with Chinese leaders focusing on strengthening Nepal-China relations through infrastructure development, trade, and people-to-people exchanges. Key agreements included commitments to improve road and air connectivity, promote cross-border trade, and enhance cooperation in areas such as education, technology, climate change, tourism, and sports.
A significant highlight of the visit was the discussion on the long-awaited Kerung-Kathmandu railway project, which China has agreed to support with technical and financial assistance. This project, once completed, is expected to significantly enhance Nepal’s connectivity with its northern neighbor, facilitating trade and reducing dependence on traditional routes.
The visit also coincided with Prime Minister Oli’s participation in the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Summit, where he underlined Nepal’s commitment to multilateralism and regional cooperation. Oli emphasized the importance of collective global action in addressing climate change, sustainable development, and emerging security challenges.
At the SCO forum, Nepal’s role as a bridge between South Asia and China was reiterated, with leaders from participating countries welcoming Nepal’s constructive engagement in regional initiatives. Analysts say Oli’s speech further cemented Nepal’s position as an emerging voice for smaller nations seeking equitable partnerships in a shifting global order.
Observers note that Nepal’s deepening ties with China reflect its strategic pursuit of balanced diplomacy-maintaining strong ties with both of its neighbors, China and India, while also engaging with broader international communities.
By all accounts, Prime Minister Oli’s visit has opened new avenues for cooperation that could have lasting impacts on Nepal’s development trajectory, regional connectivity, and global standing.
