In a major step toward strengthening disaster preparedness in South Asia's vulnerable mountain and riverine regions, the Prakop Alert mobile application is offering communities real-time access to weather and flood forecasts, helping them act early and save lives.
Developed collaboratively by the International Centre for Integrated Mountain Development (ICIMOD), Danish Red Cross, and the Nepal Red Cross Society, the app delivers two-day advance forecasting of extreme weather conditions - including rainfall, temperature, wind, lightning, and potential flash floods.
Launched with its most recent update on 7 July 2024, Prakop Alert integrates cutting-edge scientific tools - including ICIMOD’s High-Impact Weather Assessment Toolkit (HIWAT) and Flash Flood Prediction Tool (FFPT) - to ensure the delivery of timely, accurate, and location-specific information.
The app is particularly beneficial for:
Communities in disaster-prone and remote mountainous regions
Disaster risk reduction (DRR) practitioners
First responders and humanitarian organizations
With both Nepali and English language support, Prakop Alert ensures inclusivity and usability for a diverse group of users. Its data-driven approach enhances early warning capacities and supports proactive decision-making, minimizing the human and economic toll of extreme weather events, which are increasing in frequency due to climate change.
“This is a major breakthrough in regional risk reduction efforts,” said an ICIMOD spokesperson. “Access to early and reliable forecasting can mean the difference between resilience and catastrophe.”
The app aligns with ICIMOD’s broader commitment to climate resilience and sustainable mountain development, and demonstrates the power of regional collaboration in turning scientific data into actionable knowledge.
