Nepal Prepares Climate Damage Assessment for COP-29 Summit

In preparation for the upcoming Climate Conference (COP-29), set to take place in Baku, Azerbaijan from November 11 to 22, a key discussion was held by the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) on assessing climate-induced loss and damage in Nepal. This assessment will primarily focus on the impact of extreme weather events this year, including heavy rainfall, floods, landslides, inundations, and glacial lake outbursts, and will quantify the human and material losses resulting from these climate-related disasters.

The assessment preparation is based on directives issued by the National Council for Disaster Risk Reduction and Management, which met on October 18. The council has tasked the Ministry of Forests and Environment, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Ministry of Home Affairs, and the NDRRMA with collaborating on a comprehensive report. This report will highlight the recent toll of climate hazards in Nepal and underscore the nation’s vulnerability as it advocates for greater international support and policy action at COP-29.

This marks a vital step for Nepal as it brings forth firsthand experiences of climate-induced hardships to the global stage, seeking concerted efforts for both mitigation and resilience-building measures.
