Dhading, June 30, 2025 - Cracks have reappeared on the ground near the entrance to the Nagdhunga tunnel at the Sisne Khola section of the Tribhuvan Highway, sparking concerns about potential landslides in the area. This section, part of the under-construction Nagdhunga-Naubise road project, has a history of instability, with a landslide occurring last year.
The recent cracks and minor displacements in the ground have prompted an immediate inspection by officials from the Nagdhunga-Naubise Road Project and the Tunnel Construction Project, accompanied by technical experts.
Chief District Officer of Dhading, Suman Ghimire, highlighted the heightened risk of landslides on the right side of the tunnel’s entrance. According to experts, the vulnerable area spans approximately 180 meters in width and 40 meters in height. To mitigate the risk, officials have been instructed to cover the upper sections with tarpaulins to prevent water infiltration and stabilize the area.
Ghimire emphasized the importance of managing necessary materials promptly and directed both project teams to implement immediate safety measures.
The potential landslide poses a significant threat to nearby settlements and the Tribhuvan Highway, a crucial access road to Kathmandu. Residents of houses located near the vulnerable area have expressed concern about their safety.
Given the critical importance of the Tribhuvan Highway for the transportation network and the risks to human settlements, authorities are taking proactive steps to prevent further instability. However, experts warn that the recurring cracks indicate an urgent need for long-term geological studies and preventive measures in the region.
