Compound Climate Extremes Intensify Global Risks, Study Warns

A new study by the Zurich Climate Resilience Alliance has raised serious concerns over the growing frequency and intensity of compound climate extremes, where events such as heatwaves and floods occur simultaneously or in rapid succession. These overlapping hazards are increasingly straining urban systems and exposing vulnerabilities in infrastructure and communities worldwide.
According to the study, the rise in compound risks is being driven by a combination of accelerating climate change and rapid urbanisation. Cities, with their dense populations and often overstretched infrastructure, are particularly at risk. When multiple climate events occur together, they can overwhelm drainage systems, energy supply, public health services, and transportation networks—leading to cascading failures across sectors.
Recent global events illustrate the scale of the challenge. The impacts of Hurricane Beryl in Texas demonstrated how extreme weather can disrupt critical infrastructure in developed regions, while the devastating Pakistan floods of 2022 exposed how vulnerable communities face disproportionate risks and long-term recovery challenges. In both cases, the compounding nature of climate hazards amplified damage and deepened existing social and economic inequalities.
The study emphasizes that traditional, single-hazard approaches to disaster management are no longer sufficient. Instead, it calls for integrated and equity-focused strategies that address multiple risks simultaneously. Nature-based solutions are highlighted as key tools for building resilience. These include expanding green urban spaces, implementing bioswales to manage stormwater, restoring wetlands to absorb excess water, and promoting community-led adaptation initiatives.
Experts involved in the research stress that without urgent and coordinated action, compound climate extremes could significantly undermine sustainable development gains, particularly in rapidly growing urban areas across the Global South.
The findings serve as a call to policymakers, urban planners, and communities to rethink resilience planning-prioritizing inclusive, adaptive, and ecosystem-based approaches to better prepare for a future shaped by increasingly complex climate risks.
