Tumlingtar: A Hidden Beauty in Nepal’s Eastern Highlands

Khandbari Municipality–9, Sankhuwasabha – Tumlingtar, a serene town nestled in the Arun Valley, is making strides as a hub of cultural and natural significance in eastern Nepal. Positioned strategically between the Arun and Sabha rivers, Tumlingtar is not only the gateway to the Makalu Barun National Park but also a region steeped in tradition and biodiversity.

Upgraded Airport Connectivity

Tumlingtar Airport, operational since 1972, recently underwent a significant upgrade to accommodate larger aircraft, including the 72-seater ATR planes introduced by Buddha Air. This development has eased travel for locals and tourists, paving the way for economic growth and increased tourism in the region.

Cultural and Religious Landmark

A short distance from the airport lies the Manakamana Temple, a revered Hindu shrine situated on the banks of the Arun River. Drawing thousands of devotees annually, the temple is particularly vibrant during the Kartik festival in November, showcasing the rich spiritual heritage of the region.

Community and Lifestyle

Tumlingtar is home to a diverse population, including ethnic groups like the Kumal, Rai, and Tamang communities. While traditional pottery, once a hallmark of the Kumal people, is now rare, the town continues to celebrate its cultural diversity through festivals and communal activities.

Nature and Adventure

The town serves as a starting point for treks to Makalu Base Camp, attracting adventure enthusiasts from around the world. The surrounding Makalu Barun National Park, renowned for its rich biodiversity, offers glimpses of rare species such as the red panda and snow leopard. Additionally, the Arun River is a hotspot for river rafting and bird watching, further enhancing Tumlingtar’s appeal as an eco-tourism destination.

Challenges and Opportunities

Despite its natural and cultural wealth, Tumlingtar faces challenges, including the need for sustainable infrastructure and conservation efforts. As tourism expands, local stakeholders are calling for policies to balance development with environmental preservation.

Looking Ahead

Tumlingtar's unique blend of tradition, biodiversity, and adventure positions it as a rising star in Nepal's tourism landscape. With improved connectivity and growing recognition, the town holds promise as a model for sustainable development and cultural preservation.
