Kathmandu, Nepal - Switzerland is taking a monumental step in the renewable energy sector by transforming its extensive railway network into a source of solar power. This bold initiative, spearheaded by Swiss startup Sun-Ways, introduces the world’s first removable solar panels designed for active railway tracks, seamlessly merging infrastructure and sustainability.

Revolutionizing Energy with Railways

The innovation lies in installing durable photovoltaic panels directly between train tracks, where they can withstand the constant weight and vibrations of passing trains. These panels, engineered for efficiency and resilience, do not interfere with railway operations. A specially designed train facilitates the installation, allowing rapid deployment of the panels at a rate of up to 1,000 square meters daily.

In its initial phase, the project near Buttes in the canton of Neuchâtel features 48 panels generating 18 kilowatts of energy—enough to produce approximately 16 megawatt-hours annually. The electricity generated can be harnessed for railway infrastructure, fed into the national grid, or even power train operations.

A Visionary Solution for Renewable Energy

Switzerland’s railway network spans over 5,000 kilometers, offering immense potential for solar energy generation. Sun-Ways estimates that scaling this technology across the network could yield up to 1 terawatt-hour of clean electricity annually, sufficient to meet nearly one-third of the energy needs of the country’s public transportation system.

Unlike traditional solar farms, this approach avoids the need for additional land use, maximizing the potential of existing infrastructure. Additionally, the panels are removable, ensuring that essential track maintenance can continue unhindered—a key innovation setting a global benchmark for sustainable design.

Global Interest and Future Expansion

The project has captured international attention, with delegations from countries such as France, Belgium, and South Korea expressing keen interest in replicating the technology. Sun-Ways plans extensive testing over the next three years to refine the system’s performance across diverse environmental conditions, aiming for a scalable, global solution.

Pioneering a Sustainable Future

This groundbreaking initiative showcases Switzerland’s commitment to blending modern infrastructure with environmental responsibility. By unlocking the untapped energy potential of its railway system, the country is not just powering homes but inspiring the world to rethink the possibilities of renewable energy.

Switzerland’s solar railway project redefines how nations can harmonize growth with sustainability, proving that the path to a greener future could indeed run right beneath our feet.
