Prithvi Highway Reopened After 13-Hour Obstruction Due to Bridge Collapse

Dhading – The vital Prithvi Highway, a key route connecting Kathmandu to the rest of Nepal, has resumed operation after being blocked for approximately 13 hours due to the partial collapse of a bridge in Thakre Rural Municipality.

On Tuesday morning, around 10:15 AM, a section of the bridge at Sopyang Khola in Ward No. 7 subsided, bringing vehicular movement to a standstill. The incident occurred at a location where the highway is undergoing upgrading and construction, highlighting the challenges of maintaining traffic flow during large-scale infrastructure projects.FB_IMG_1748392341701-1748392376.jpg

The Cause of the Collapse

The bridge, which is part of the older infrastructure being used during the construction of a new bridge, suffered significant damage when its girder sank, creating a large sinkhole on one side. This unexpected failure not only disrupted traffic but also raised concerns about the stability of existing structures amidst ongoing development.

Efforts to Reopen the Highway

The Eastern Section of the Naubise-Mugling Road Project worked tirelessly to address the situation. By midnight, the team managed to partially restore traffic by filling the sunken area with gabion mesh, enabling one-way vehicular movement. Additionally, a diversion was created to allow two-way traffic flow, ensuring a temporary solution to the disruption.

Implications for Development and Safety

The incident underscores the complexities of balancing infrastructure upgrades with the need for continuous traffic flow. It also raises questions about the safety protocols in place during such projects. While the construction of a new bridge is underway, the reliance on aging infrastructure poses significant risks that need to be addressed proactively.

Looking Ahead

As Nepal continues to invest in upgrading its transportation network, this incident serves as a reminder of the importance of integrating safety, sustainability, and contingency planning into development projects. Authorities must also prioritize communication with the public to manage expectations and ensure the safety of road users.

The resumption of traffic is a welcome relief for commuters and transporters alike, but it highlights the need for vigilant oversight and rapid response mechanisms in critical infrastructure projects.
