Kathmandu, May 19, 2025
Nepal marked a milestone in global climate diplomacy as the first-ever Sagarmatha Dialogue, themed "Climate Change, Mountains, and the Future of Humanity," concluded with the issuance of a transformative 25-point Sagarmatha Call to Action. The dialogue, which commenced on May 16, underscored Nepal’s commitment to addressing climate change impacts, particularly in mountainous and vulnerable regions.
Reaffirming Global Climate Goals
The Call to Action reiterated the urgent need to limit global temperature rise to below 1.5°C above pre-industrial levels by strengthening international partnerships. It also called for increased mobilization of international climate finance to support adaptation and mitigation measures in developing countries and those most at risk from climate change.
Focus on Mountain Ecosystems
In a groundbreaking move, the dialogue advocated for the establishment of a dedicated fund for mountain nations to mobilize resources for climate action and sustainable development. Recognizing the critical role of mountain ecosystems, it emphasized rewarding ecosystem services through innovative financing mechanisms.
The dialogue also prioritized promoting science and technology-driven solutions to protect glaciers, forests, water resources, and agricultural systems – vital lifelines for millions worldwide.
Inclusive and Resilient Development
The Sagarmatha Call to Action placed inclusivity at the heart of its recommendations. It underscored the importance of empowering youth, women, indigenous communities, and persons with disabilities in climate action. The document called for gender balance and intergenerational equity in addressing climate challenges.
Furthermore, the dialogue emphasized clean energy transitions and green infrastructure development, aiming to power the future through sustainable economies, including circular and bio-economies.
Strengthening Global Collaboration
To amplify the voices of mountain communities in global climate processes, the Call to Action proposed creating an international multi-stakeholder platform. This initiative seeks to foster dialogue, innovation, and empowerment, ensuring that the concerns of vulnerable regions resonate in international climate forums.
A Vision Beyond Borders
The Sagarmatha Dialogue concluded with a unifying commitment: to forge a collective voice for immediate climate action, echoing from Sagarmatha (Mount Everest) to the seas and from highlands to islands. Nepal’s leadership in organizing this dialogue serves as a testament to its role as a champion for climate justice and sustainable development.
A Bold Step Forward
The Sagarmatha Dialogue sets a precedent for international cooperation in tackling the interconnected challenges of climate change, biodiversity loss, and sustainable development. It highlights the power of collaborative action in safeguarding the future of humanity and the planet.
