A Decade After the Devastating Earthquake: Gorkha's Warpak and Laprak Rebuilt with Resilience

Gorkha - April 25, 2025, marks the 10th anniversary of the catastrophic earthquake that struck Nepal, leaving an indelible impact on millions of lives. The 7.8 magnitude quake, which occurred on Baisakh 12, 2072 BS, devastated much of central Nepal, with Gorkha being one of the hardest-hit districts.

In the aftermath, Warpak village and Laprak, located in the northern region of Gorkha, became focal points of reconstruction efforts. Warpak, known as the epicenter of the earthquake, bore witness to unparalleled destruction. Similarly, Laprak, home to a tightly-knit community of indigenous Gurungs, was nearly wiped off the map. The resilience and unity of these communities, combined with national and international support, have since transformed these regions into symbols of hope and recovery.

Warpak: Rising from the Epicenter

The reconstruction of Warpak village emphasized the use of earthquake-resistant designs and locally available materials. The residents, with assistance from government and international organizations, rebuilt their homes and public infrastructures like schools and health posts. Today, Warpak stands not just as a reconstructed village but as a testament to the enduring spirit of its people.

Laprak: A Model Settlement

Laprak gained attention as the site for a model settlement project, showcasing modern disaster-resilient housing. Hundreds of families were relocated to this new settlement, designed to withstand future seismic events. The model settlement features well-planned roads, proper drainage systems, and community centers, serving as a blueprint for sustainable reconstruction in other disaster-prone areas.

Challenges and Progress

While significant progress has been made, challenges persist. Access to remote regions remains difficult, and some families still struggle to rebuild their livelihoods fully. Yet, the story of Warpak and Laprak serves as a reminder of what collective determination and solidarity can achieve.

A Call to Action

As Nepal reflects on the 10 years since the earthquake, it also serves as a moment to renew commitments to disaster preparedness, sustainable reconstruction, and community resilience. The lessons learned from Warpak and Laprak are invaluable for building a more secure future for all.FB_IMG_1745546504992-1745546895.jpg

Ecosphere News salutes the courage and perseverance of the people of Warpak and Laprak, whose journey from devastation to renewal continues to inspire the nation and the world.
