Dolpali Yaks Draw Rising Demand in Mustang

Jomsom, Mustang - Yaks brought from Upper Dolpa to Jomsom are becoming an increasingly valuable part of the high-Himalayan livestock trade, with demand for Dolpali yaks reportedly rising in Mustang.
The animals are transported along the rugged Mustang-Dolpa corridor and brought to Jomsom for sale. According to the information accompanying this photograph, Dolpali yaks are currently being traded for more than Rs150,000 per animal, reflecting their value in the mountain economy.
The trade also highlights the continuing economic and cultural links between Upper Dolpa and Mustang. Yaks remain particularly important in the remote Himalayan regions, where they are used for transportation, livestock production and livelihoods. Recent reporting has also documented the movement of yaks between Dolpa and Mustang and the importance of the Mustang-Dolpa route for transporting livestock and goods.
In Mustang, yak husbandry is also receiving local support. Gharpajhong Rural Municipality recently introduced a 50 percent cost-sharing programme to encourage yak and nak farming among livestock producers.
The sight of these powerful Himalayan animals moving through Jomsom is more than a striking mountain scene-it reflects a living tradition of livestock trade, mobility and economic exchange across some of Nepal's most remote landscapes.
