Kathmandu, July 19 - Heavy monsoon rainfall has once again inundated Sahabhagita Marg in Kathmandu Metropolitan City-10, disrupting local movement and highlighting the city's longstanding urban drainage problems. The road was submerged after continuous rainfall, with stormwater accumulating due to inadequate drainage capacity.
The accompanying photograph shows floodwater covering the entire roadway, making it difficult for pedestrians and vehicles to pass safely. Such incidents have become increasingly common during the monsoon season, as even short periods of intense rainfall overwhelm drainage systems in several parts of the Kathmandu Valley.
Urban planners and experts have repeatedly identified poor drainage infrastructure, blocked stormwater channels, rapid urbanization, and extensive concrete development as key factors contributing to frequent waterlogging. Heavy rainfall concentrated within short time periods further intensifies the problem, preventing stormwater from draining efficiently.
Waterlogging not only disrupts daily commuting but also increases the risk of traffic congestion, road accidents, contamination from stagnant water, and damage to urban infrastructure. The recurring inundation underscores the need for improved stormwater management, regular maintenance of drainage networks, and climate-resilient urban planning to reduce the impacts of increasingly intense monsoon rainfall.
As the monsoon continues across Nepal, authorities are urged to strengthen drainage maintenance, remove obstructions from stormwater channels, and implement long-term infrastructure improvements to minimize flood risks in vulnerable urban areas.
