Kathmandu, June 30 - Marking Social Media Day, an interactive online calculator has drawn global attention by illustrating how the cumulative time spent on social media can amount to years over a person's lifetime, prompting renewed discussions on digital wellbeing and balanced technology use.
The calculator, published by Al Jazeera and based on global digital usage data from DataReportal, enables users to estimate how much of their lives they spend on social media by entering their average daily screen time across various platforms. It then projects the total time spent over a week, month, year, decade and even across an average lifetime.
According to the analysis, the average active social media user spends approximately 2 hours and 39 minutes per day on social networking platforms, equivalent to 18 hours and 36 minutes each week. Over the course of a year, this adds up to more than 40 full days devoted solely to social media use.
The findings highlight the growing role of social media in everyday life. With billions of users worldwide relying on digital platforms for communication, education, entertainment, business and news, experts say the cumulative impact of daily screen time is becoming increasingly significant.
The calculator is intended as an awareness tool rather than a scientific assessment. By visualising long-term screen time, it encourages users to reflect on their digital habits and consider how they balance online engagement with offline activities such as work, study, family interaction, physical exercise and recreation.
