FAO Supports Disaster-Hit Farmers in Ilam and Saptari Through Climate-Smart Agriculture Initiative

Kathmandu, June 27 - Farming communities affected by the devastating floods and landslides of 2025 are gradually rebuilding their livelihoods through a climate-smart agricultural recovery initiative implemented by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) in Nepal.
Under FAO Nepal's Technical Cooperation Programme (TCP) Emergency Project, climate-resilient paddy and vegetable seeds have been distributed to disaster-affected households in Ilam Municipality and Mai Municipality of Ilam District, as well as Saptakoshi Municipality and Hanumannagar Kankalini Municipality of Saptari District.
The initiative aims to restore agricultural production, strengthen household food security, and support the recovery of farming families whose crops and livelihoods were severely impacted by last year's floods and landslides. According to FAO Nepal, the intervention is helping previously damaged and abandoned farmland return to cultivation while improving the resilience of vulnerable communities against future climate-related disasters.
The project promotes climate-smart agricultural practices by providing improved seed varieties suited to changing climatic conditions, enabling farmers to resume production more quickly after disasters. The effort also contributes to building long-term resilience by supporting sustainable farming practices and enhancing local food systems.
Nepal remains highly vulnerable to climate-induced disasters, with floods and landslides frequently affecting agricultural production and rural livelihoods. Development partners and government agencies have increasingly emphasized disaster preparedness, climate adaptation, and resilient agriculture as essential measures to safeguard food security and rural incomes.
The recovery initiative reflects broader efforts to help farming communities not only recover from disasters but also strengthen their capacity to withstand future climate shocks through improved agricultural practices and resilient seed systems.
