NPHL Reviews Five Years of AMR and Respiratory Virus Surveillance, Calls for Stronger One Health Collaboration

Kathmandu, 26 June 2026 - The National Public Health Laboratory (NPHL), with technical support from the World Health Organization (WHO), concluded a two-day review meeting on 26 June to assess the progress of Nepal's Antimicrobial Resistance (AMR) and Integrated Influenza and Other Respiratory Virus Surveillance Systems.
Held on 25–26 June 2026, the review examined the implementation of both surveillance systems over the past five years, highlighting major achievements, ongoing challenges, operational gaps, and opportunities for improvement.
The meeting brought together representatives from key government agencies, technical experts, development partners, and stakeholders working under the One Health approach, which promotes coordinated action across the human, animal, and environmental health sectors. Participants shared experiences and lessons learned through a series of technical presentations.
Panel discussions and group sessions focused on identifying practical recommendations to strengthen surveillance systems, improve data sharing and coordination among sectors, and enhance preparedness for emerging public health threats.
Participants emphasized the importance of sustained multisectoral collaboration, strengthened laboratory capacity, and long-term investment to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of Nepal's disease surveillance systems. The recommendations developed during the review are expected to contribute to strengthening national efforts to monitor antimicrobial resistance and respiratory viruses while supporting evidence-based public health decision-making.
The review reflects Nepal's continued commitment to improving integrated disease surveillance and advancing the One Health approach to better protect public health against current and emerging infectious disease threats.
