  • Marsh Rice Cultivation Expands Across Jumla’s Acharyawada Fields, Sustaining High-Altitude Farming Tradition
Marsh Rice Cultivation Expands Across Jumla’s Acharyawada Fields, Sustaining High-Altitude Farming Tradition

Jumla, Nepal – Vast marsh rice fields in Acharyawada of Chandanath Municipality-1, Jumla, are showcasing the region’s centuries-old agricultural heritage as local farmers engage in seasonal paddy cultivation. The lush green landscape, surrounded by hills and mountains, reflects the importance of rice farming in supporting livelihoods, food security, and cultural traditions in Nepal’s Karnali region.
The water-filled terraces visible across the valley indicate the active planting season, during which farmers carefully prepare fields and transplant rice seedlings. Rice cultivation in Jumla is globally significant because the district is recognized as one of the highest-altitude rice-growing regions in the world, with cultivation occurring at elevations ranging from approximately 2,400 to over 3,000 meters above sea level.
Agriculture remains the primary source of income for many households in the district, and traditional varieties such as Jumli Marshi continue to hold cultural, nutritional, and economic value. The cold-tolerant rice varieties cultivated in Jumla have adapted to the region’s harsh climatic conditions and contribute to preserving local agricultural biodiversity.
Recent reports indicate growing interest among farmers in rice cultivation due to increasing demand for Jumla’s unique rice varieties. Local communities across the district are actively engaged in planting activities, reinforcing the importance of agriculture as a cornerstone of the region’s rural economy.
The scenic paddy fields of Acharyawada not only symbolize agricultural productivity but also highlight the resilience of mountain farming systems that have sustained communities in the Himalayas for generations. As planting activities continue, farmers remain hopeful for favorable weather conditions and a productive harvest season.
