A global online symposium focusing on human rights, sustainable development, climate governance, and international law is set to bring together young leaders, policymakers, academics, legal experts, and advocates from around the world on 10 July 2026.
The event, titled “Human Rights, Sustainable Development & the Law: 2026 International Online Symposium and Hon Justice C.D. Gonthier Memorial Lectures,” is being organized by the Centre for International Sustainable Development Law (CISDL) and the McGill Centre for Human Rights and Legal Pluralism. The initiative is being promoted by the youth-led platform Keep the Change: Youth Policy Lab as part of its efforts to strengthen youth participation in policy, governance, and global justice discussions.
According to the organizers, the symposium will serve as an international platform for examining some of the most pressing global challenges and opportunities related to sustainable development and human rights. Key discussion themes include human rights and climate governance, sustainable business and finance, indigenous rights and legal pluralism, intergenerational justice, rights of nature, and innovative legal and policy approaches to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
The program will also feature the biennial Hon Justice Charles D. Gonthier Memorial Lectures, alongside the presentation of the 2026 H.E. Judge C.G. Weeramantry International Justice Awards and Global Fellowship recognitions.
Organizers have encouraged youth leaders, students, researchers, advocates, and changemakers from across the globe to participate in the event. Participants who attend at least three of the five symposium sessions will be eligible to receive certificates of participation.
The symposium reflects growing international efforts to engage younger generations in shaping policy solutions related to climate action, environmental governance, human rights protection, and sustainable development, while fostering dialogue on the future of international law in addressing global challenges.
