A two-day high-level mission involving Ambassadors from 22 European Union (EU) Member States to Nepal concluded on Tuesday with a high-level meeting with Nepal’s Prime Minister, marking renewed engagement between Nepal and its European partners on governance, economic cooperation, investment, and sustainable development.
The delegation was led by Véronique Lorenzo, Ambassador of the European Union to Nepal. During the concluding meeting with Nepal’s Prime Minister, the EU delegation congratulated the government on its recent electoral success and reaffirmed continued support for the government’s priorities, particularly in strengthening good governance and accelerating economic growth.
According to the discussions, the EU and its Member States reiterated their commitment to deepening bilateral and multilateral cooperation with Nepal while emphasizing the importance of strengthening people-to-people relations as a foundation for long-term partnership.
In response, Prime Minister Balendra Shah expressed the government’s intention to further expand cooperation with the EU and its Member States. He highlighted the government’s commitment to delivering tangible and visible public services, referencing the mandate it received from the electorate.
As part of the mission, the EU Ambassadors also engaged with entrepreneurs and representatives of Nepal’s private sector, including stakeholders from manufacturing, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), energy, tourism, and technology industries. Discussions focused on identifying opportunities to strengthen collaboration and attract greater European investment into Nepal’s economy.
The delegation additionally met with civil society representatives to exchange views on issues including freedom of expression, press freedom, human rights, and women’s rights—areas that continue to shape Nepal’s democratic and social development agenda.
Tourism promotion formed another important component of the visit. In a separate interaction jointly hosted by the Trekking Agencies' Association of Nepal at The Dwarika’s Hotel, EU Ambassadors and tourism entrepreneurs discussed both opportunities and existing challenges in Nepal’s tourism sector. Conversations explored strategies to position Nepal as a year-round premium destination for European visitors.
Speaking at a press conference following the mission, Ambassador Lorenzo stated that cooperation between the European Union and Nepal continues to expand and that recent dialogues with government representatives, private-sector actors, civil society, and youth leaders reflected significant opportunities ahead. She emphasized that Team Europe remains committed to working closely with Nepal to address challenges related to employment generation, sustainable economic growth, and inclusive development.
Observers view the visit as a signal of continued European interest in supporting Nepal’s economic transformation and institutional strengthening through dialogue, investment, and long-term partnership.
