Science Journalists to Receive Resilience Training Amid Rising Online Harassment and Workplace Pressures

London, UK - In response to growing concerns over online abuse and workplace challenges faced by science journalists, the Association of British Science Writers (ABSW), in collaboration with UWE Bristol, is set to host a one-day interactive training workshop aimed at strengthening resilience in the profession.
Scheduled for Thursday, 7 May 2026, the workshop will take place at Nature Publishing Campus, bringing together journalists navigating increasingly complex reporting environments shaped by digital polarization and public scrutiny.
Addressing a Growing Challenge
Science journalists today often cover highly debated topics such as climate change, vaccines, and genetically modified food-issues that frequently trigger strong public reactions. With the rapid pace of digital media, journalists are not only under pressure to meet tight deadlines but are also exposed to harassment and hostility, particularly on social media platforms.
This workshop aims to directly address these challenges by equipping participants with practical tools to manage stress, maintain professional integrity, and sustain high-quality reporting under pressure.
Expert-Led Practical Sessions
The sessions will be led by resilience and media experts John Crowley and Hannah Storm from the Headlines Network. They will guide participants through strategies to cope with online abuse, build emotional resilience, and foster supportive professional environments.
Adding an academic perspective, Dr Andy Ridgway will present findings from recent research examining the extent and impact of workplace and online harassment experienced by science journalists.
Toward Long-Term Support
A key outcome of the workshop will be the collaborative development of a practical guide designed to help journalists navigate hostile online environments. This resource will later be published by ABSW and UWE Bristol’s Science Communication Unit, ensuring continued support beyond the event.
Strengthening Journalism in a Polarized World
As misinformation, public mistrust, and digital aggression increasingly intersect with science reporting, initiatives like this highlight the urgent need to protect journalists’ well-being while reinforcing the integrity of science communication.
The workshop reflects a broader recognition that resilience is no longer optional but essential for journalists working at the frontlines of complex global issues.
