India’s Clean Energy Expansion Faces Structural Gaps Despite Record Growth

India is accelerating its transition toward clean energy, yet a widening gap between ambition and on-ground realities continues to challenge the country’s long-term climate goals.
The Government of India has set an ambitious target of achieving 500 gigawatts (GW) of non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2030, positioning itself as a global leader in renewable energy expansion. As of early 2026, the country has installed approximately 283 GW, leaving a significant gap of over 200 GW to be bridged within the next five years.
While progress remains notable-with record renewable energy additions reported in the past year-the pace of expansion is still insufficient to meet the 2030 deadline without substantial acceleration. More importantly, experts highlight that installed capacity alone does not reflect actual energy transition outcomes.
Despite renewables now accounting for over half of India’s total installed power capacity, they contribute only around one-third of actual electricity generation. This disparity underscores a deeper structural issue: renewable energy sources such as solar and wind remain intermittent, requiring robust grid systems and storage technologies to ensure reliability.
A major bottleneck lies in infrastructure. Large-scale renewable projects, particularly in resource-rich regions like Rajasthan, are facing delays due to inadequate transmission networks, leaving tens of gigawatts of clean energy capacity stranded. At the same time, a mismatch between supply and demand has resulted in several projects struggling to secure long-term buyers, reflecting inefficiencies within the power distribution system.
India’s continued dependence on coal further complicates the transition. Fossil fuels still generate nearly 70 percent of the country’s electricity, driven by rapidly rising energy demand linked to economic growth and urbanization. This highlights a critical dilemma: while clean energy capacity is increasing, fossil fuels remain central to ensuring energy security.
Financial and policy dynamics also contribute to the gap. Analysts note that subsidies and financial support for fossil fuels still outweigh those directed toward clean energy, potentially slowing investment momentum in renewables. Meanwhile, the expansion of battery storage and grid modernization-essential for integrating renewable power-is progressing but not yet at the scale required.
India’s clean energy challenge is therefore evolving beyond capacity targets. It now reflects a multi-dimensional gap involving generation efficiency, infrastructure readiness, financial alignment, and rising energy demand.
Nevertheless, India’s progress remains significant on the global stage. The country continues to be one of the fastest-growing renewable energy markets, with increasing investments in solar, wind, and emerging storage solutions. The coming years will be critical in determining whether India can align its rapid expansion with systemic reforms needed to achieve a sustainable and resilient energy future.
