China and India Signal a Decade of Cautious Climate Action, Raising Global Concerns

Kathmandu - As the climate crisis intensifies, the policy direction of the world’s two largest emerging emitters-China and India-is drawing renewed global scrutiny. Together accounting for a significant share of global greenhouse gas emissions, both nations are expanding clean energy at scale while simultaneously maintaining a cautious approach that prioritizes economic stability and energy security.
Recent developments indicate that China’s emissions growth may be stabilizing, with signs of a potential peak approaching. The country continues to dominate global renewable energy deployment, particularly in solar, wind, and electric mobility. However, its latest policy frameworks allow for moderate emissions growth in the near term, and coal remains a critical pillar of industrial and energy systems.
India, on the other hand, has announced updated climate targets aiming for a substantial reduction in emissions intensity and a significant increase in non-fossil fuel energy capacity by 2035. While renewable energy expansion is accelerating, coal continues to dominate the country’s energy mix, and overall emissions are still rising, albeit at a slower pace.
Analysts describe this trajectory as a decade of “cautious climate action”-a balancing act between development needs and environmental responsibility. Both countries emphasize equity in climate commitments, highlighting their lower historical contributions to global emissions and the need for developed nations to take the lead.
Despite measurable progress, current policies in both China and India are not yet aligned with the global goal of limiting temperature rise to 1.5°C under the Paris Agreement. Continued reliance on fossil fuels, particularly coal, and the absence of rapid absolute emission reductions remain key challenges.
The implications are global. Without accelerated action from major emitters, the world risks exceeding critical climate thresholds, with far-reaching consequences for ecosystems, economies, and vulnerable populations.
As the next decade unfolds, the choices made by China and India will play a decisive role in shaping the trajectory of global climate efforts-determining whether the world moves toward meaningful mitigation or deeper climate uncertainty.
